Of All Time is a limited edition multiple produced on the occasion of the group exhibition RELAY [02] at Platform A, Middlesbrough. The assemblage brings together a range of found and fabricated elements, including steel mesh, rubber-coated magnets, steel box-section tubing and printed material, extending Simona Brinkmann’s long-standing exploration of the relationship between bodies, objects and space.
At the centre of the work is a low-resolution image sourced by the artist online, depicting a goat improbably suspended from a telephone wire. The absurdity of the scene prompts questions about authenticity in an era increasingly shaped by AI-generated imagery. Brinkmann deliberately retains the image’s degraded, pixelated quality, and leans into it by scaling up its dimensions - working against the conventions of high-definition fine art printing and reinforcing her interest in materials and images that occupy an ambiguous or low-status position.
The archival inkjet print is held loosely between a robust steel frame and a layer of flexible mesh, secured by heavy-duty magnets. The choice and use of materials emphasises the physical contrasts within the work. The rough, open ended box-section frame is assembled with visible butt joints, while the mesh and paper remain delicate and pliable. These differing material qualities establish a tension between weight and fragility, containment and suspension.
The assemblage subtly disrupts the conventions of picture framing. The printed image extends beyond the dimensions of both its support and the mesh layer that partially obscures and transforms it.
Suspended and immobilised between these elements, the goat becomes both subject and metaphor. It is caught within a system of forces that simultaneously support, constrain and display it. The overlaid mesh alters the image, unexpectedly sharpening its contours while further implicating the perforated steel structure in the act of seeing.
This interplay between image, object and infrastructure is central to Brinkmann’s practice. Working with light, sound, found materials and fabricated forms, she investigates how spatial systems shape our behaviour and perception. The industrial, the domestic and the architectural are frequently modified and recombined into unfamiliar configurations, revealing how environments are structured through objects that exert subtle forms of control and influence.
Simona Brinkmann was born in Milan and is based in Nottingham. She studied at Middlesex University and Central Saint Martins, graduating with an MA in Fine Art in 2006. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including projects at Fondazione Per L'Arte in Rome, The Art House, and Scolacium Archaeological Park.
